Roberta Colton
I grew up in Houston, Texas, the second of four sisters. After graduating from Stanford University in 1972 with a BA in French, I married, and moved to Los Angeles where I attended UCLA Law School. After graduation, I relocated to Washington, DC where I became the first female attorney in the
Office of the Legislative Counsel of the US Senate. After two years, I joined a law firm where I specialized in commercial real estate law.
I had my children late (at 33 and 37). I served on the Board of Trustees of their K-8 school, and later joined the Board of a public charter school where I chaired the School Expansion Committee and then the Board of Trustees. I also ran (as a volunteer) my synagogue’s transitional housing program for four formerly homeless families. I
retired from law practice in 2011, and devoted myself to building a high school for the middle school on whose Board I served, and co-chairing a giving circle of about 30 women who pooled their funds to make grants to programs benefitting economically disadvantaged girls and young women.
I love to travel, swim, do yoga, and create Ikebana. Since moving to Santa Fe in 2019 with my then spouse of 46 years, I am creating art (oil pastels and collage) in my “spare” time. After divorcing my husband in 2020, I met a new partner who shares my love of travel, cooking, hiking, and chamber music. My daughter is an occupational therapist living in Denver, and my son is a business writer and consultant living in the District of Columbia. Neither is married so I am still waiting (hoping) for a first grandchild! In the meantime, I am content with my beautiful but aging ruby Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Caramel.
