Jan Cohen
I grew up in the grit of New York City. Thankfully, I attended a public arts high school which expanded my horizons. I stalked the art museums as soon as I could ride the subways alone.
After high school and a series of dead-end jobs, I landed a dream job with a theater production
company as a craftswoman. Our clients included New York City Ballet, the Rolling Stones, Shakespeare in the Park, Metropolitan Opera, Martha Graham Dance Company, and Walt Disney Studios.
In 1975, I visited New Mexico and fell in love with her vast, beautiful landscapes. Luckily, I was able to transfer my skills in the theater arts to the Santa Fe Opera as a sculptor/scenic artist. I moved to NM the following year.
Since childhood, I had a fantasy of living in a remote, primitive cabin in the mountains. In 1977 I had the opportunity to do so. I was soon horrified to learn that uranium mining was proposed in a bordering wilderness area. Our small community organized against it and won! So began my life as an advocate for public land and wildlife.
A happy, unexpected career change came after teaching a children’s art class in the small mountain community. I eventually earned a Masters of
Education degree. I am the first in my family to go to college. I have since taught in various settings. My favorite position was as Education Outreach Specialist at Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
