Debbie Harmon
I’ve lived in Santa Fe for 12 years and I came from
Bethesda, MD, although I grew up in Silver Spring, both places in the Washington, D.C. metro area. My daughter and her husband live in Glorieta, NM, which is what brought me here with my significant other, Ron. I have a son and daughter-in-law in Los
Angeles who I try to see as often as possible.
I was a schoolteacher in Montgomery County, MD for 30 years where I taught, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6thand 7th grades teaching English. Getting assigned to help student teachers was something I enjoyed, and I also sponsored the Newspaper at Westland Middle School.
When my children were young and we lived in Howard County, MD, we had an au pair from Germany. Later, we housed an exchange student from Belgium since the sponsors were unable to find a high school student to host. I’ve always enjoyed people from other countries, and I knew this would be a broadening experience for my family and it was. I also wrote for local newspapers covering the school board and doing feature articles.
Dogs and animals have been a love of mine and at age eight, I put a sign in our front yard that said, “We want a dog.” My parents didn’t concur, but as an adult, I’ve almost always had a dog, a very important family member to me. I’m pictured with my dog Winnie.
Since retiring (my favorite job ever), I’ve enjoyed participating in book groups, discussion groups, Indivisible SOS, and I’ve been active in my neighborhood, Rancho Viejo. I also love to travel and to explore new places, dine in restaurants, and I appreciate spending time with family and friends.
